What inspired Credit Canada to develop Mariposa, and how does it represent a shift in how Canadians can manage their debt using AI?
Bruce Sellery: I use AI every day. Most people do, even if they don’t go to ChatGPT. It’s everywhere. We knew that we needed to be first movers on bringing AI to non-profit credit counsellors. We were the first to offer credit counselling in Canada, back in the 1960s. We have also been the first to implement major tech innovations in the non-profit sector. For example, we’re the first to provide professional counselling via live chat and the first to implement an app for newcomers to Canada called Butterfly. We also built 4 e-learning modules about credit building in 8 different languages.
At Credit Canada, our mission is to help people get out of debt so they can get back into life. We’ve supported millions of Canadians over the past five decades, and we saw a new opportunity to scale that support using AI. With debt levels rising and more people missing payments, it became clear: Canadians need immediate, personalized support to get out of debt, at their own pace and whenever it’s most convenient for them.
That’s why we built Mariposa. It’s Canada’s first AI-powered debt management agent, designed to provide confidential, 24/7 support through an easy-to-use chat interface. It’s not just a tool—it’s a breakthrough in how people can access debt advice.
Mariposa is the first of its kind in Canada. How do you ensure the technology remains empathetic, trustworthy, and human-centric in such a sensitive financial space?
Bruce Sellery: We knew from the start that Mariposa had to be more than just smart—it had to create the same kind of supportive experience you would have when speaking to one of our credit counsellors. Debt is emotional. So we built Mariposa using our own credit counselling framework, based on decades of real-world experience. We trained the AI using interviews with our counsellors that brought to life how they validate clients’ experiences, and provide reassurance, empathy and hope and client case studies. Then, we partnered with Midas Labs to ensure the AI behaves in a way that’s empathetic, helpful, and secure.
As for creating a trustworthy experience, trust starts with privacy. We know that when it comes to AI, especially in a sensitive space like personal finance, privacy is a huge concern, and rightfully so. We worked with Midas Labs to ensure Mariposa meets high privacy and data protection standards, so Canadians can use it confidently and safely.
Users’ information is not saved or shared, unless the user chooses to submit their information through a form or a debt assessment. Transcripts are not saved. “The data is always protected — it’s encrypted when it’s sent and when it’s stored, so it stays safe every step of the way.

What role did consumer behaviour and data insights play in shaping the AI’s approach to supporting people through their debt journey?
Bruce Sellery: Understanding how people actually experience debt was essential in shaping Mariposa. We’ve spent decades working with people in debt, so we know the emotional and financial patterns that can keep them stuck. We drew on everything from client case studies to the way our counsellors frame conversations, layering in insights and nudges from behaviour finance to ensure the AI responds in ways that are actually helpful, not just informative.
Mariposa aligns with how our counsellors approach every step of the debt journey: with empathy, clarity, and zero judgment. That’s what makes it feel so grounded and human, even though it’s powered by AI.
Many fintech innovations focus on wealth-building. Why was it important for Credit Canada to focus on debt relief, and how does AI enhance accessibility to financial support?
Bruce Sellery: Many fintech solutions prioritize wealth-building, which is important, but for many Canadians, the more urgent issue is debt management. The average non-mortgage debt hit over $21,000, and 1.4 million people missed a credit card payment just in Q1 of this year. Without financial stability, building wealth just isn’t possible.
Using AI allows us to make financial support more accessible by removing common barriers such as language, anxiety, or limited availability. Mariposa provides free, 24/7 guidance that meets people where they are, ensuring more Canadians can get the help they need, exactly when they need it.
Looking ahead, how do you see tools like Mariposa evolving? Could we see broader applications in financial wellness or any other space?
Bruce Sellery: Definitely. We’re already seeing how AI is being used across the financial industry, from fraud prevention to budgeting tools like RBC’s NOMI or Bloom’s Oscar AI.
With tools like Mariposa, the next step is more personalization and more proactive support. Imagine getting a gentle reminder before you miss a payment, a nudge when your spending shifts, or real-time help rebuilding your credit.
What really excites me is the potential to make quality advice more accessible. As this technology becomes more widely available, it can help close the gap for people who’ve been left out because of cost, complexity, or stigma.
